1st Impressions: Defendant

2a87

Defendant premiered last week and I had to force myself to watch.  Mostly because I was in the mood for a romantic comedy and not a suspense drama.  But the power of Ji Sung is strong and despite my craving for fluff I put my big girl pants on and pushed play.  I am so glad I did because not only was this drama worth watching but it also became my #1 currently airing drama.  So join me as I give you a quick (spoiler free) rundown of the pros and cons of Defendant.

SYNOPSIS: Park Jeong Woo is a prosecutor at Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office. One day, he wakes up and finds himself a convict on death row. Suffering from temporary amnesia, Jeong Woo has no idea what transpired to land him in prison. He struggles to recover his memory and clear his name before his time is up.

PROS

  • Ji Sung!
  • Ji Sung!!
  • Ji Sung!!!  If you hadn’t realized my focus yet, it is 100%, Ji Sung.  He is AMAZING as brilliant prosecutor turned amnesiac prisoner.  He had me from the first 5 seconds as we watch him attempt a jailbreak.  I can’t wait to see where his character goes from there.
  • But it isn’t just Ji Sung alone that makes this a must watch drama for me.  Even Ji Sung couldn’t make me like Entertainer no matter how hard he tried to pretend he had chemistry with Hyeri.  To have a strong drama (especially a suspense mystery) you need a strong script.  And Defendant is a very strong script.  They have perfectly mixed the past and present to create wonderful layers of mystery and suspense.
  • The cherry on the drama sundae has to be Uhm Ki Joon who plays one crazy psychotic killer complete with inferiority issues via his dad and twin brother.  I have to admit that I am enjoying Ki Joon’s character almost as much as Ji Sungs and when they face off against each other it is pure cinematic chemistry.  I am one happy fangirl.

CONS

  • It really ticks me off when an idol is obviously put into a drama that they are in no way suited for.  Such is the case with leading lady Kwon Yu Ri.  I am not saying she is the worst actress ever.  However, it is pretty clear that someone was pushing their idol actress agenda and not thinking of the good of the drama with this casting.  Because it is 100% obvious that she is just not up to the same level as literally every other character in the show.

So there you go.  The Pros and Cons of Defendant.  Hopefully, you will give this drama a try.  Especially since 95% of it is brilliant so far.  Be sure to drop me a note on your thoughts in the comments

  1. I am still going to wait before watching this drama. It seems to be intense … and for the moment my agenda is also too intense … there will be too much intensity “in the house”! Argh Patience!

  2. Awww.I’m a fan of Ji Sung but I think I’ll just wait until this drama finishes. I’m not currently in the mood to watch any kdrama right now. I was shocked to see that I’m more of a cdrama watcher these past months or so.
